Summary

An "unevaluated" CIA Domestic Collection Division report on Soviet aerospace medicine covers Aeroflot's fatigue measures, prophylactoria and automated pilot-testing equipment demonstrated by Dr. Akutin of Leningrad's Civil Aviation Institute. Its summary says radiation biologist Dr. Inal Georgiyevich Akoyev "explained cosmic ray particles (phosphenes) which are causing Aeroflot pilots to 'see' flashes of light during night flying." Asked for a personal opinion on UFOs, the source (name redacted) told Akoyev that 99 percent were traceable to natural or man-made causes and "the other one percent cannot be explained--possibly an hallucination"; Akoyev asked whether "there be something coming from outer space?" Only two of the report's four pages are released.

Note

UFOs are a passing topic in a report mostly about pilot medical testing.
