Summary
Briefing notes addressed to Mr. Walter N. Elder say that on Nov. 19, 1964, the USS Gyatt tracked a contact "in excess of 3,800 knots" while working an F-8 Crusader at 35,000 feet; the object slowed and held station at the fighter's nine o'clock about nine miles away, then, when the pilot closed to about five miles on afterburner, accelerated in a 20° climb and pulled away, staying on radar for 21 minutes and later closing from astern to four miles as the fighter returned to Roosevelt Roads. On Nov. 24 the Atlantic Fleet Weapons Range held a high-speed, high-altitude target that pulled away from another Crusader flying Mach .99 at 45,000 feet, and the Nov. 19 pilot described a delta-shaped object about the size of a jet fighter in full moonlight. The notes say the Gyatt filmed its radar scope, the pilot estimated speed above Mach 3, and ONI had no further information.
Note
The raw briefing version; CIA-UAP-D022 holds the later CIA analysis that called it a probable fighter.
