Summary
State Department Airgram A-628 from the U.S. Embassy in Rio de Janeiro, signed for the Ambassador by Scientific Attaché André C. Simonpietri, gives a negative report on a UFO reportedly sighted near Salvador, Bahia. It quotes Consul Harold Midkiff's telegram of Nov. 14 saying the story of a strange object descending near Conde was "apparently fabricated in Rio," with no such object seen by anyone in the area, and that the state security secretary speculated it might be a weather balloon. The consul also forwarded two clippings: a Nov. 9 Diario de Noticias item saying the Ministry of Aeronautics "categorically denies" any strange object, and a Nov. 11 Jornal da Bahia piece headed "The Airship that wasn't there."
Note
The follow-up that deflates DOS-UAP-D001: the U.S. consul found the story unsubstantiated.
