Summary
Includes a 3 November 1948 letter signed by Maj. Gen. C. P. Cabell, Director of Intelligence, by command of the Chief of Staff, stating 'the conclusion appears inescapable that some type of flying object has been observed' and asking Air Materiel Command for conclusions and press guidance. AMC's 8 November reply reports a study of approximately 180 incidents, groups the objects as discs, cigar shapes, spheres and balls of light, and concludes 'there is as yet no conclusive proof that unidentified flying objects, other than those which are known to be balloons, are real aircraft.' It advises against giving the press information on objects that cannot yet be identified.
