Summary

The U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby reports an informal inquiry from PNG's National Intelligence Organization about sightings of "HIGH-ALTITUDE, HIGH-SPEED AIRCRAFT" on the evening of Jan. 24 that frightened residents near Wewak and led to a public meeting attended by the prime minister. The NIO placed some credence in an Air Niugini pilot's report that his radar picked up aircraft at high altitude and speed over Angoram, along with reported contrails. The embassy says it told the NIO it knew of no B-52 overflights or U.S. aircraft in PNG airspace that day and asks USCINCPAC to confirm.
